Since returning to campus from the holiday break, the cable service has been cut off for the whole campus, leaving the J-school students absent of their daily news.

Typically, the televisions in the building help keep students informed by playing a variety of different news and informational channels throughout the day.

Felixia Francios, a senior broadcast journalism student, noticed the televisions were off after returning from winter break.

“I read the news on my own, but I usually see what’s happening by also checking the TV in the hallway to brush up before my news quizzes,” Francios said.

Staff members also confirmed the change and said it has affected other areas of the building as well.

Kayla M. Jefferson, coordinator of academic programs for academic advisement, said the televisions in office suites have also been impacted.

“There could be requests made by students up to the dean to get the cable back, potentially, but we also have not been able to watch the news on the TVs in the suites as well,” Jefferson said.

According to staff, several requests were made to restore the cable service. An announcement was made on the FAMU Task Management System after multiple reports about the outage.

“It wasn’t the IT department that made the decision to cut the cable, and we are unaware of why or who made it,” said Cynetria C. Burns, a clerical and secretarial staff member in the IT Services department.

At this time, the department says the decision did not come from IT Services, and the reason behind the change remains unclear.

As of Monday March 23, the cable in the School of Journalism and Graphic Communications has been restored, and students are allowed to view the news again.
