Liverpool remain determined to sign Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande despite growing competition for the RB Leipzig forward following his impressive start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 21-year-old made his World Cup debut on Sunday and caught the eye with an energetic performance as Ivory Coast secured a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener.

Sources indicate that Liverpool view Diomande as their leading target as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.

However, there is increasing concern at Anfield that French champions Paris Saint-Germain could enter the race if negotiations continue to drag on.

World Cup performance boost Diomande’s stock

Diomande’s performance against Ecuador has only heightened interest in the winger, who is already regarded as one of the most promising young attackers in European football.

Liverpool have maintained contact over a potential transfer and are understood to be working towards an agreement with RB Leipzig.

Club officials are keen to avoid a bidding war, particularly if Diomande continues to impress on football’s biggest stage.

Further standout displays at the World Cup could attract additional interest from other elite European clubs, potentially increasing both competition and his market value.

While Liverpool have alternative options under consideration, Diomande remains their preferred choice.

    Gakpo future remains uncertain

The Merseyside club are also monitoring other attacking targets, including French winger Bradley Barcola, should a deal for Diomande fail to materialise.

At the same time, questions remain over the future of Cody Gakpo. Reports suggest the Netherlands international could be open to a new challenge, with sources indicating his long-term future at Anfield is not guaranteed.

Although Liverpool are not actively looking to sell the Dutch forward, the club would reportedly consider suitable offers following the World Cup.

The developments come during a period of transition for Liverpool following the appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach after the departure of Arne Slot.
