North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will receive more than $110.3 million to boost student success, strengthen academic programs, expand research, and prepare graduates for the workforce.

The funding, allocated through North Carolina’s newly enacted state budget, reflects continued investment in the university as it expands enrollment, academic programs, and research initiatives.

State Budget to Support North Carolina Central University’s Growth

In recent years, the HBCU has reached several major milestones. NCCU is now serving more than 9,000 students, a first in its 116-year history. This year, the university launched what it describes as the nation’s first AI institute at an HBCU and added new degrees in counseling and formulations and packaging science.

They also led HBCU nursing programs in North Carolina with the highest NCLEX passage rate. The college also earned a clean audit from North Carolina’s State Auditor.

As one of the fastest-growing institutions in the University of North Carolina System, NCCU will use this funding to serve more students, invest in faculty and staff, improve campus facilities, and create more pathways for students to thrive.

“This investment is about opportunity, impact and the future of North Carolina Central University,” said Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon. “We are grateful to the North Carolina General Assembly for their support and committed to being good stewards of these resources as we continue bringing our Vision 2030: Soaring to New Heights strategic plan to life.”

The state budget for NCCU includes $98.6 million in recurring base funding to support university operations, and $7.3 million in enrollment funding to support continued growth. It also provides $3.3 million in recurring program-specific funding through the UNC System, $900,000 in recurring funding for the Cheatham White Scholars Program, and $300,000 in North Carolina Collaboratory funding administered through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The budget also includes funding for faculty and staff compensation, athletics through sports wagering revenues, and campus improvements. That includes more than $6 million for the Edmonds Classroom Building.

In addition, there is new support for expanded health-related academic programs that will help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals and meet North Carolina’s workforce needs.

    Funding Includes Campus Improvements

Visitors to campus will see part of the state investment firsthand. More than $6 million is earmarked for upgrades to the Edmonds Classroom Building. NCCU will also receive funding for additional facilities and to expand health-related academic programs designed to prepare more graduates for North Carolina’s healthcare workforce. That workforce focus is central to the state’s support.

NCCU posted the highest NCLEX passage rate among HBCU nursing programs in North Carolina, and has continued to add programs aligned with growing industries. Recent additions include a doctoral program in counseling, a bachelor’s degree in formulations and packaging science, and a new institute focused on artificial intelligence.
